Why Local Businesses Should Pay Attention

ChatGPT Ads are finally available for local businesses.

OpenAI now offers geographic targeting for ChatGPT Ads, including targeting by state, designated market area (DMA), and ZIP code in the U.S.

That removes a major obstacle for local businesses interested in advertising on ChatGPT.

Why Geographic Targeting Matters for Local Businesses

Local advertising only works when you can reach people you actually serve. An electrician in Northern Colorado doesn’t need leads from Texas. A dentist in Denver doesn’t need to advertise in New York City.

With geographic targeting, businesses can narrow their ChatGPT advertising campaigns to supported locations where their customers actually are.

That’s a critical step toward making ChatGPT Ads useful for local businesses.

How Do ChatGPT Ads Work?

ChatGPT Ads are different from traditional Google search ads.

Google Ads are largely built around what someone searches for. ChatGPT has the potential to understand more of the context surrounding what someone is trying to accomplish.

That’s where this gets interesting.

Someone may have an entire conversation about a problem before deciding they need a business to solve it. Combining that context with local geographic targeting creates an opportunity to reach potential customers in your market when the conversation is relevant to what you do.

Will Geographically Targeted ChatGPT Ads Work?

We don’t know how well these ads will work yet. ChatGPT advertising is still very new, and their Geo-Targeting is hot off the presses. There aren’t years of conversion data or established benchmarks to tell me how it compares to Google Ads, Meta, or other established advertising channels.

What we do have is another advertising channel that’s worth testing and measuring what matters.

Should Local Businesses Try ChatGPT Ads?

For the right business, a small, targeted experiment may make sense. For others, waiting for the platform to mature may be the better decision.

I’m not interested in spending money on ChatGPT Ads just because they’re new. I’m interested in finding out if they work.

The way people find information and businesses is changing quickly, and advertising platforms are changing with it.

I want to stay ahead of those changes, test opportunities when they make sense, and keep the focus where it belongs: generating qualified leads and revenue for our clients.
