This blog is about to share information with you that will change your life, completely, if you let it.
Say it out loud. I can already hear you.
“As If.”
Come on. With a bit more derision, people.
Kids say it on the playground, usually when confronted with a peer’s confident boast of success.
“We’re going to Disney Land!”
“As if!”
Disbelief and derision. It is the tone we hear first. Let me help you change that.
Think, “As if”, as in a solid realization of believed possibilities.
The bible talks about the power of faith. Faith that moves mountains. Faith, defined as “the assured expectation of things hoped for, though not beheld.”
Not a pretend manifestation from the unknowing universe. As in a “Gimme cause I believe” plan towards success. Social media will feed you that till you choke. It dares us to disagree and miss out on all the good stuff waiting around the corner if we don’t properly manifest our ultimate truth and heart’s desire.
No – what I’m talking about is science-based. William James, known as the father of American Psychology, knew this over a 100 years ago. We don’t just smile because we are happy. We are happy because we smile. We do not run because we are afraid; we are afraid because we run. The amygdala (the cute, fun little part of the brain) plays a key role in this. Modern science has proven James’ belief. Look him up. I think he would have been fun at parties.
Any emotion we feel dictates what we do. Marketer Roy H Williams puts it this way: “Win the heart and the mind will follow.”
But let’s go beyond marketing. Let’s talk about all of it.
The (not so ) simple acts of writing, marketing, hiring, and building a business based on what you want to accomplish, and acting like you are already there, is the ultimate science of “As If” thinking. Behaving “As If” you are a 2 million dollar a year company insists you do the things a 2 million dollar a year company must do. Act “As If” you are already there, and you will get there. You will be there. Because you already are.
No weird “woo woo” manifestation meditations required.
If you were healthy and fit and feeling fine, what would your diet look like? What would your day look like? Live that way. “As if” you are already feeling great. And you will.
Talk to a golfer about approaching a water hazard. When they consistently tell themselves, “Don’t go in the water!” guess what happens? Yup, they go in the water. Because we – our brains- hear “water”. Don’t is not recognized. Your game is played between the ears first, and you are acting “As If” you are in the water. And so you are.
Here are some basic keys to “As If” thinking. You will need some quiet, a pen, and paper. I’ll wait. And no, it doesn’t have to be the perfect pen and an heirloom-quality notebook.
Now, think about this:
What do you want to happen? Why? Seriously, is this what YOU want to happen?
Okay – list everything. Not just one thing. All of it. Sure – If you want to keep the theme business-related, go ahead. But if you really want to travel to Europe for a month and think that has nothing to do with your work life, we might need some in-person chats.
So – write it all down. Okay – write down at least 10 things.
Now, for each of the ten, note 3 things that need to happen for this item to become real. What we are after is the equivalent of how to get this done. Like Grade One- remember? Yes, we all did it; it was a challenge. But now it is finished, accomplished, and we have moved on.
From your list of 10, pick your top 3.
And now, this month, start living “As If” one of them is in fact, the way it is. Use the map of 3 things to know what this feels like. Tell yourself it is. Over and over. Write it. Tell others.
Do it, live it, embrace it, for a month.
And when you start the next month and pick the next one of the remaining two, your life will already be closer to where you want to be. And by month three. Well.
That is the power of “As if” thinking.
The tone we use dictates what happens next. In our marketing. In our business growth. In the fullness and joy of our lives.
As if!
